The Washington Capitals defeated the Vegas Golden Knights four games to one to win the Stanley Cup four years ago this week.

Since then, the Capitals have not won a playoff series since, getting first-rounded four consecutive times. While the Caps’ core and identity have largely stayed the same, the 2018 team’s supporting cast has moved on. Only nine of those 27 players are still on the team while two others, Shane Gersich and Pheonix Copley, remain in the organization.

Some key members of the 2018 championship team have flourished elsewhere. Others have wound down their careers or retired in different organizations or leagues.

For this exercise, we’re going to focus on the “departed” in alphabetical order. The Capitals’ championship players that remain on the NHL team include Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, John Carlson, Tom Wilson, Lars Eller, Michal Kempny (pending UFA), Evgeny Kuznetsov, Dmitry Orlov, and TJ Oshie.

Fun fact: Since winning a championship, Ovechkin has scored 173 goals in four seasons, including 50 goals twice. He won the Rocket Richard Trophy back-to-back in 2019 and 2020. Next season will be his age-37 seasonnj devils military jersey. Ovi has 780 career goals nowcanadiens montreal wallpaper iphone. He had 607 then.

Scott Arniel believes overcoming the lowest point in his career will help him reach higher aspirations with the Winnipeg Jets.ottawa hockey

Arniel was , 12 years after his only other time in the role ended with him being fired by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

“One of the darkest times for me in coaching — probably in hockey — was when I got fired in Columbus,” Arniel said at a media availability at Canada Life Centre on Monday. “I had never been through it. It took a long time to get over it.

“Whether it was anger or it was doubt. Whatever it was, it took a while. You can ask my wife, you can ask my kids, even some of my friends — I was a grumpy person.”

Arniel, 61, did not know if this day would ever come again.

“I’ve been sitting here for 12 years wondering, always wondering, ‘Am I ever going to get a second chance?’” he said. “And I’ll tell you what, there’s some great coaches in our league right now that got a second chance and a third chance, who are having great success, and I like to think I’ve learned a lot over these past few years that are going to help me move forward.”

Arniel, who had been the associate coach in Winnipeg over the last two seasons, takes over the reins

He has come full circle since being drafted in the second round by the Jets in 1981, playing for the team for five years before being traded, then returning.

Bowness and Arniel had led the Jets to a franchise-tying record 52 wins while earning the Jennings Trophy for fewest goals allowed last season. But, after going 52-24-6, the Jets bowed out in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs for the second straight year.

Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff believed that Arniel had a good enough handle on the team to hire him after interviewing only two other candidates.

canadiens de montréal paris:wild minnesota hats

“He’s sitting here today because he’s earned this opportunity,” said Cheveldayoff, who liked the way Arniel communicated with the players and handled the team under duress. “The reality is, you’re going to build upon something that the foundation has been laid.”

Arniel, who posted a 45-60-18 record over a year and a half with the Blue Jackets, admitted that he was pretty green when he was hired by Columbus, but has since learned from his mistakes. He has a 15-7-3 record over three stints when he was pressed into duty when Bowness was out.

“It helped me to build confidence in myself and what I can do as a coach,” Arniel said. “In my coaching career, this is the greatest personal chapter to become the head coach of the Winnipeg Jets.”

The Jets have parted ways with assistant coach Brad Lauer, but will keep assistant coach Marty Johnston and goalie coach Wade Flaherty. Arniel started to interview assistant coach candidates on Monday.

Kraken fans now know who will be on the bench leading their team in Seattle’s inaugural season.

On Thursday, the NHL’s latest expansion team announced that Dave Hakstol will be the first head coach in franchise history.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to be able to join the hockey community here in Seattle,” Hakstol said in his introductory press conference. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to become part of the cracking organization, and we certainly look forward to becoming a part of the community here in the city of Seattle.”

According to the Kraken’s team page, general manager Ron Francis was looking for someone with previous experience as an NHL head coach. Hakstol meets that standard with his history in the league as a coach, having guided the Flyers from 2015-18.

“As a first-time coach in the NHL, you have to learn the league.” Francis said, per the Kraken. “It is fast-paced and a challenge to adjust on the fly. I think with the first situation in Philly and the years with [former Maple Leafs head coach Mike] Babcock and [current Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon] Keefe, Dave is comfortable with understanding the league.”

Here’s all that you need to know about Hakstol and how he came to coach the Kraken.

Hakstol became the head coach of the Flyers at age 46 in 2015, but how he got there was unconventional to say the least.

Prior to coaching Philadelphia, Hakstol had been the University of North Dakota’s head coach. To that point he had no experience coaching at the NHL level. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Bob Johnson was the last coach to go straight from the college ranks to the top spot of an NHL team’s coaching staff when he went from Wisconsin to the Flames in 1982. Ned Harkness (from Cornell to the Red Wings in 1970) was the first and Jim Montgomery (University of Denver to the Stars in 2018) is the only coach to do it since.

Hakstol developed plenty of talent at North Dakota, having coached NHLers like Jonathan Toews, T.J. Oshie and Matt Greene, among others. While there, his team had a 289-143-43 record and reached the Frozen Four in 2015. He sent more than 30 players to the NHL.

His tenure in Philadelphia did not last long, however, as he coached for just three full seasons. The Flyers reached the playoffs in the 2015-16 and 2017-18 seasons, missing it in 2016-17. His teams did not make it out of the first round in either trip to the Stanley Cup playoffsmaple leaf toronto line up. He was fired 31 games into the 2018-19 campaign and finished his Philadelphia career with a 134-101-42 record.

maillot de foot brésilien

He was brought back into the NHL before the 2019-20 season as an assistant head coach with the Maple Leafs.

In addition to his time coaching in the NHL and at the collegiate level, Hakstol was on the coaching staff of Canada’s men’s national ice hockey team for the 2017 IIHF World Championship tournament and on the 2019 IIHF World Championship tournament.

It was in the 2019 IIHF World Championships that he and Francis worked together, according to NBC Sports, as Canada advanced to the finals and finished as the runner-up in the tournament. Canada also placed second in the 2017 IIHF World Championship tournament.

Stephane Pattyn, former University of North Dakota player: “He turns kids into men. Guys show up at 18, 19, 20 years old and leave three or four years later as men. He’s more worried about the people we become than his winning percentage. I think that says a lot about him. He’s by far the greatest coach I’ve ever played for. He’s taught me a lot on the ice and as a person. Every guy in that room has his back. He genuinely cares about all of us.”

Ron Francis, Kraken general manager: “Tracking back to University of North Dakota days, Dave is a coach who cares about his players. At times, a coach’s messages can get diluted. Players want to understand what the coach wants them to do. Dave communicates clearly and concisely. Players like that.”

Tod Leiweke, Kraken CEO: “We are so proud of the momentum built for this franchise to launch. From an incredible fan base came a brilliant arena, a world class training center and agreement by a Hall-of-Famer to become our GM. And today is another major step forward. On behalf of David Bonderman and our entire ownership group we welcome Dave Hakstol to Seattle and to the Seattle Kraken.”

On Wednesday night, the bears from Boston will roar into Vancouver for Game 1 of the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals against the Canucks, who will … well, we’re not entirely sure what it is a "Canuck" does.

Or, for that matter, how the Western Conference champions ended up being called the "Vancouver Canucks" to begin with.

Turns out, it’s a tale that spans from slang to literature to political cartoons to comic books to Moose Jaw to goalie Roberto Luongo’s mask.

meaning "a Canadian, especially a French Canadian."

Where did it originate? One theory from the Online Etymology Dictionary is that it dates back to 1835 and is a mash-up of "Canada" and "Chinook," the native tribe found in the Pacific Northwest Coast.

Another, from the Random House Dictionary, is that "Canuck" originated from "kanaka," the word used to describe a South Sea Islander, many of whom worked the fur trade on the Pacific Coast with French Canadians. "Kanaka" plus Canada eventually morphed into "Canak."

in literature came in the mid-19th Century:

About a decade later, the word "Canuck" would enter the mainstream … and we have Uncle Sam to thank for it.

To counter that iconic U.Sred wings detroit stanley cup. political cartoon, Canadian editorial cartoonists began using the image of "Johnny Canuck," an amiable blue-collar lunk-head who stood up to Uncle Sam’s bullying (even if he wasn’t depicted as the sharpest saw in the forest).

In 1935, the term crossed over into hockey for the first time. The Moose Jaw Canucks played in the . The name would be used by the franchise in different leagues through 1982.

In the 1940s, another U.S. icon helped pushed the "Canuck" name back into the pop culture mainstream — Captain America.

Cap debuted in 1940 and sold a million issues of a comic depicting him . Two years later, cartoonist Leo Bachle turned the old Johnny Canuck character from the political cartoons into Canada’s own comic book avenger: Powerful, rugged and able to wage a one-man war against Hitler as capably as Captain America did.

The more valorous image of Johnny Canuck helped change the way people thought of the term "Canuck."

In 1945, after the end of World War II, the Pacific Coast Hockey League expanded to Vancouver and the new franchise took the name "Canucks" as a way to honor the bravery of Canadian soldiers who fought overseas.

the team also "adopted Johnny Canuck as their mascot, depicting him as a lumberjack, appropriately attired in a checked shirt and toque, and carrying a hockey stickmaillot personnalisé des blue jackets de columbus timber. "

In 1970, the minor league Vancouver Canucks (now playing in the Western Hockey League) were purchased and transferred to the NHL as an expansion team.

The name remained, having gained popularity locally with four championships and five Hall of Fame players. Johnny Canuck, alas, was left behind … until he was rescued 36 years later by Vancouver goalie Roberto Luongo.

Luongo said ever since he arrived in Vancouver, he was a fan of the Johnny Canuck character. So when it was time for a new goalie mask in 2007, he added a rugged, intense image of the Canadian icon to the top of his helmet for "aggressiveness." ()

The following year, Vancouver incorporated Johnny Canuck into a special logo design on its revamped uniforms:

So that’s how the Vancouver Canucks got their name … which brings us to one last question: Is "Canucks" a derogatory term?

Some dictionary definitions cite "canuck" as being offensive slang to a certain group of people. Are the Vancouver Canucks actually the Washington Redskins of the NHL? Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau addressed that question in a letter to columnist William Safire in 1977:

Over time, "Canucks" has lost its edge and has come to simply mean "Canadians." There’s much more on , on which he surmises: "Given the potential for confusion, it’s probably best for us Yanks to avoid the term unless referring to the hockey team."

Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa has laid the foundation stone marking the start of construction of a new cricket stadium in Victoria Falls.

The said the new Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium will be one of the stadiums used for the 2026 and 2027 World Cups which Zimbabwe is jointly hosting with and Namibia.

Zimbabwe will co-host the Under 19 Men’s cricket World Cup in 2026 with Namibia before it jointly hosts the with Namibia and South Africa.

Mnangagwa said, “Zimbabwe is honoured and remains ready to proudly host the 2026 cricket World Cup. The proposed cricket stadium is one of the priority projects that will be pursued with urgency as we develop, expand and improve our national integrated infrastructure.”

The government last week revealed that it is aiming to complete the stadium’s construction by August 2025.

The new venue is expected to be a multi-sport facility which will cater for other sports including rugby, hockey and netball.

Mnangagwa added, “This project is most welcome as it will enhance the rich natural heritage associated with our premium resort city.

“The location of this stadium in this city will undoubtedly contribute to the speedy attainment of tourism sector targets towards our national development aspirations as outlined in the National Development Strategy Vision 2030.”

Mosi-oa-Tunya cricket ground will be the first international standard cricket ground to be owned by Zimbabwe Cricket, which has also revealed it is planning to upgrade local cricket stadia so they meet modern standards.

Currently, there are three cricket grounds which can host international games: Harare Sports Club, Queens Sports Club and Takashinga Cricket Ground.

However, they are falling behind standards set by modern cricket grounds with cushioned seats, digital entry gates and terrace roofs.

Zimbabwe Cricket media and communication manager, Darlington Majonga said plans are underway to upgrade these facilities.

“As Zimbabwe Cricket we are the first to admit that our stadiums are no longer adequate, we had to lock out some fans during the 2023 World Cup Qualifiers but that’s not what we want to do we want to have as many people as people to access our grounds and we want their experience to be awesome when they come into the grounds.

“So work is already underway as you are aware we will be co-hosting the 2027 men’s World Cup and before that, we are also hosting the next edition of under 19 world cup together with Namibia, so these are massive tournaments and we are working to improve our facilities for more global tournaments.

“Under normal circumstances, clubs should be taking care of these facilities as you know we (Zimbabwe Cricket) are tenants these facilities are owned by clubs but improving these facilities is something we are looking forward to do together with the owners.”

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — The Blue Jackets‘ season begins Thursday night against former coach John Tortorella and the Philadelphia Flyers at Nationwide Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.

The Jackets endured a tumultuous offseason in which it hired and parted ways with coach Mike Babcock in less than three months. Babcock agreed to step down in September, days after he was accused of violating players’ privacy by asking to inspect pictures on their phones.

Associate coach Pascal Vincent was promoted, signing a two-year contract. This is Vincent’s first crack at being an NHL head coach, but he has more than 30 years of coaching experienceflames jobs calgary. He takes over a team that finished tied for the second-worst record in the NHL. The Blue Jackets have missed the playoffs three years in a row since mutually parting ways with Tortorella. The Athletic has Columbus pegged to finish with 75 points, last in the Metro Division and with a 1% chance of qualifying for the playoffs.

The Jackets have the third-youngest team in the NHL for a second straight season, with an average age of 25.8.

Returning are seven-year All-Star Johnny Gaudreau, standout right winger Patrik Laine, and two young but talented left wingers in Cole Sillinger and Kirill Marchenko. The offense will look much different to start the season with Laine projected to play center.

“I wouldn’t even be trying it if I thought I could just survive and be average. I really think that I can be a really good center,” Laine said. “I know I can compete with those guys, and that’s why I want to do this in the first place.”

Gaudreau led the team in points (74) and assists (53) last season and could be even better if the Laine experiment works. Laine missed 27 of 82 games, the second season in a row he had played in fewer than 60.

“We had some glimpses together last year,” Gaudreau said. “We’ve done a good job of playing well together in the preseason and he’s doing a great job at center.”

The Blue Jacket who will play on that front line with them remains a mystery. Vincent can choose from Cole Sillinger, the No. 12 pick in 2021, and the 23-year-old Marchenko, which had a successful rookie season. No player in Blue Jackets history scored as many goals in their first season as Marchenko, who only needed 53 games to break Pierre Luc-Dubois’ 20-goal record. The Russian native finished third on the team in goals despite beginning his NHL career in December.

The new season features 2023 No. 3 overall pick Adam Fantilli, who will celebrate his 19th birthday in his NHL debut against Philadelphia. The Michigan center adds needed depth at center for the Blue Jackets, who were extremely thin there last season.

Along with Laine at center, the Blue Jackets have captain Boone Jenner, Fantilli, Dublin native Sean Kuraly, Sillinger, Alexandre Texier and Justin Danforth.

On defense, they acquired free agents Ivan Provorov and Damon Severson to shore up a back line hindered by injury.

blues de st. louis bar

Two seasons ago, the Blue Jackets allowed a franchise-record 297 goals. They were even more dismal last season, allowing 329 goals.

It starts with the goaltender. Six goalies made an appearance for the last season. Elvis Merzlikins’ first year under a five-year, $27 million contract was underwhelmingjets rumors winnipeg. He allowed an NHL-worst 4.23 goals per game for goalies who played at least 25 games, and his save percentage of .876 was the second-worst in the league.

Merzlikins missed more than a dozen games for various reasons: injury, illness and personal matters, but his performance came down to a lack of execution.

In front of him, veteran defenseman Zach Werenski played 13 games after suffering a torn labrum. Werenski is also an offensive presence as he’s scored at least 10 goals in five of his seven seasons. The Jackets are bolstered by the addition of Provorov and Severson, who have 16 seasons of combined NHL experience.

canadiens de montréal radio:canucks hockey

“We have to set the standard higher, and we have to make sure younger guys know [the last two years] isn’t acceptable,” Werenski said.

Also hurting last season, Nick Blankenburg missed two months because of a broken foot and Jake Bean was lost for the season in December for shoulder surgery. Injuries were a trend for the Jackets, who accrued more than 560 man-games lost to injury. At the All-Star break, they had 319 man-games lost. The next closest team was Toronto, with 199.

“We’re not far off,” Gaudreau said. “Even with where we ended up in the standings with the guys that you’re missing for the whole year and half the year and 20 games, 30 games, those are huge players and important players on our team.”
