BOSTON (AP) — Charlie Coyle scored the tiebreaking goal late in the opening period and Boston’s tight defence carried the Bruins to their fifth straight victory, 4-1 over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday night in a matchup of top NHL teams.

Jake DeBrusk, Jakub Lauko and Brad Marchand also scored as Boston improved to 10-1-3 in its last 14 games. Jeremy Swayman made 20 saves for the Bruins, who lead the Eastern Conference with 67 points.

DeBrusk had a short-handed goal with 5:25 left and Marchand added an empty-netter. Winnipeg had given up no more than two goals in 14 consecutive games, and three or fewer in 34 straight — one short of the modern NHL record set by the 2015 Minnesota Wild.

“We knew the challenge that was ahead of us. They’ve been playing some good hockey and they’re where they are in the standings for a reason. They don’t give up a whole lot,” Coyle said.

“You remember the last time we played these guys. They played really well, and we played really bad. It leaves a bad taste in your mouth and we want to show them what we’re capable of and what we can do. We definitely saw more of that tonight.”blue jackets de columbus arena store

Vladislav Namestnikov scored for the Jets, who lead the Central Division with 64 points. Connor Hellebuyck stopped 17 shots.

Last season, Boston set NHL records for wins (65) and points (135) before being eliminated in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs by the Florida Panthers.

“That’s probably the worst game we’ve had in a long time with our breakouts,” Winnipeg coach Rick Bowness said. “We were slow moving it and the passes were soft. That allows Boston to play their game.”

Coyle, positioned in the slot, tipped Linus Lindholm’s shot from the point and it sailed past Hellebuyck, pushing Boston ahead 2-1 with 1:34 left in the first period.

The Bruins had jumped ahead when Trent Frederic collected a rebound and sent it over to Lauko, who scored from the top of the crease 2:20 into the game.

Namestnikov tipped Dylan DeMelo’s shot from the point and it dipped past Swayman’s glove, tying it at 4:16.

“I think it’s all about us,” Jets forward Kyle Connor said. “We can play against any team, and I think we’ve shown that. We were just a little timid.”lightning de tampa bay line up

After scoring nine goals in Saturday night’s win over Montreal and 14 total in their previous two games, the Bruins were faced with a tough test against the league’s best defensive team.

They improved to 6-0-1 in their last seven meetings with the Jets, getting some payback for a 5-1 loss at Winnipeg on Dec. 22.

“They embarrassed us the last time we were in Winnipeg,” Boston coach Jim Montgomery said.

“We have a lot of proud guys that represent the Bruins for a long time in a real good way,” he added. “I think the opportunity to get back at them was something that was motivating.”

The Jets came in giving up just 2.25 goals per game.

Boston responded with some stingy defence of its own, holding the Jets to single digits in shots on goal until the closing minutes of the second period.

Winnipeg also entered the night with the league’s top winning percentage (72.7 per cent) and Boston was second (72.2).

The Buffalo Sabres have been a member the NHL for 53 years now, and while things haven’t been good for them in recent memory, this is a team that has iced some of the top players in history and has been a part of their fair share of amazing stories over the years.

Along with the team’s storied history on and off the ice, they have made a long list of changes, both major and minor, to their jerseys and the rest of their uniforms – some good, some bad, some representative of a particular era for the franchise. Here’s a full history of the Sabres’ jerseys, from 1970 to now.

The Sabres entered the NHL in the 1970-71 season, donning a sweater that can be called nothing if not an instant classic. The original Sabres jerseys were dominated by royal blue, featuring gold trimmings around the perimeter of the sweater. The away jerseys were a clean white, with blue and gold filling out the shoulders, sleeves, and waist stripesjets winnipeg db. The logo featured a charging buffalo (or a bison, if it’s accuracy you’re after), in-between a crossed pair of sabres, a single-edged sword used for centuries by cavalry units, mainly in pre-modern Europe.

This iconic jersey and logo remained largely the same until 1996, aside from some tweaks, small changes, and additions over the years. The three-stripe design on the sleeves and the waist of the jersey were colored yellow on the dark jerseys and yellow and blue on the white jerseys, and the same pattern was applied to the socks.

Many of the NHL uniforms sported by the legendary players of the 1970s are now revered as absolute classics, much like the debut Sabres’ uniform. For an expansion team coming into the league when they did, it did the franchise a great service to fit in from the beginning. And with the success they found in the mid-1970s, they couldn’t have looked better.

The first changes to the original Sabres uniform came in the 1978-79 season, when the team stuck the primary logo on either shoulder, right above where the player’s numbers would be. This was the same logo as the one on the chest, so it was viewed as a little redundant, but not something to lose sleep over. Those types of designs will come later.

Also in 1978-79, the Sabres decided to ditch the traditional lace-up neckpiece at the top of the chest area of the jersey, and opted instead for a V-neck look at the neck, something that would stick for years to come. I’ve personally always been a fan of the lace-up neckpiece, since I think it’s small touch unique to hockey that differentiates the uniforms from every other sport. I’m glad more teams are starting to go back to that now.

In the 1982-83 season, the Sabres changed their font to a slimmer typeface, making the nameplate and the player’s numbers appear thinner than in previous seasons. This is something that would stick around for a long time, too, and one I don’t necessarily mind. It’s certainly not the worst thing they could change about the original.

The last change the Sabres would make for more than a decade before completely overhauling the team’s look was a minor one, all things considered: thickening the striping on the sweater, socks, and pants. Oh, and they actually added more stripes, too. I wasn’t around back then, but I think if there’s anything that mid-1980s influence did to NHL jerseys, it was inspiring them to look as “busy” as possible.

The last season the Sabres would skate in their original jerseys for a long time was in 1995-96, which happened to be the franchise’s last season as the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium, or “the Aud.” Sadly, they missed the playoffs that season, so the sendoff to the fans from the Aud, where the team had played for 25 years, was not as celebratory as it might have been had they made a Stanley Cup run that year. But better times were coming, and the Sabres would be flirting with Lord Stanley in just a few short seasons – this time with a new look.

The Sabres’ first season at their new home, known then as Marine Midland Arena (now KeyBank Center), was the first season they changed their jerseys and logo to what is now a fan favorite: the “goat head.” The goat head jerseys were predominantly black, featuring some red, white, and silver striping and trimming throughout the jersey. Another of the big changes was the changing of the original Sabres logo to a new one: an angry buffalo’s head, dubbed the goat head.

This was also the first time the Sabres’ uniforms featured secondary logos on the shoulders different than the primary chest logo, which was the capital letter “B” with a sword piercing through it. This has become a popular logo for clothing and hats now, too. The font for the numbers and nameplates was also changed, to a blocky, slightly-italicized modern typeface.

Another first was adding logos to the pants and helmets, with the secondary logos being added to either side of the helmet, and a script logo reading “Buffalo Sabres” being slapped on the pants. Again, I wasn’t around when these uniforms were first debuted, but from what I understand, there were mixed receptions on them initially. It’s funny though, because much like almost every other retro jersey, this “throwback” is now beloved by the majority of Sabres fans, and has become a total fashion statement to rock around the City of Buffalo. The goat head logo even made its way back onto the Sabres “Reverse Retro” Adidas jerseys this past season.

The Sabres added an alternate jersey playing off the design changes of their goat head jersey, this one with a third logo and different colors dominating the sweater. In place of black, a prominent red took over this third jersey, and black, silver, and white filled out the sleeve and waist stripes of the new alternate.

Femme Olympic Hockey Premier Rouge Personnalisable Team Canada Extérieur 2014

Oh, and the word “BUFFALO” was slapped across the waist, in all capital letters. You know, just in case you forgot where the Sabres are from again. As for the logo itself, the primary goat head logo was used as the secondary logo on the shoulder patches, and the chest logo on this jersey was a new one altogether: crossed cartoon swords over a black circle.

I’ve seen plenty of people wear this sweater at Sabres games and elsewhere, and it has become extremely popular, since it wasn’t used by the team for all that long. The logo itself is sometimes referred to as the “dinner plate” logo, and it’s not hard to see why. In time, though, I think this alternate jersey is slowly developing into a classic in its own right.

Let’s be honest. I bet a lot of you are here because of this jersey alone. It is both one of the boldest jersey and logo design changes in history, as well as one of the most miscalculated misfires in logo design I think I’ve ever seen. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you: “the Buffaslug.”

The Buffaslug jersey totally overhauled both the primary logo and the team’s color scheme once again, while simultaneously attempting to make some sort of nod at the team’s history and original uniforms. This was the first time we saw navy blue used as the primary jersey colors, and the silver and yellow stripes clash with each other as the secondary colors.

The font for the numbers and nameplates were again changed to a different typeface, this time taking on a more mid-2000s sporty look as opposed to the blocky typeface. The nameplates were silver, too. So much silver.

Thankfully, the slug wasn’t worn every night. The organization had a third jersey one season, which was a throwback royal blue sweater, pretty much identical to the team’s first-ever jersey. Why they removed this from the wardrobe after one short season and stuck with the slug, we’ll never know.

Ironically enough, though, the Buffaslug era proved to be the last time the Sabres ever truly contended for a Stanley Cup. Alexa, play “Better Days” by the Goo Goo Dolls.

In the 2008-09 season, the Sabres did the fans a major service by adding a new alternate jersey, and switched back to their primary logo of old, the classic charging buffalo in-between two cavalry swords. Outside of the logo change, though, the color scheme stayed pretty much the same, with some stylistic changes from the Buffaslug jersey being made to mimic the team’s original uniforms.

The only thing that stuck with these jerseys was the silver. That hard-to-shake, unpopular, unnecessary silver. Both the home and away sweaters featured large swaths of silver under the arms, as well as silver piping on the sleeve stripes and waist stripes. This would later become the team’s full-time uniforms, and stuck until 2017.

In the 2010-11 season, the Sabres rejoined the NHL’s alternate jersey program, with a welcome tribute to the original royal blue and yellow color scheme. These sweaters made their best effort to look like retro throwbacks, featuring prominent stitching throughout, which ended up looking pretty nice overall. Royal blue dominated, which four yellow stripes appearing on either sleeve and at the waist, and the nameplate and numbers taking on a unique look of their own. See one of these jerseys up close, and I promise you they’re pretty darn cool.

The chest logo is where this jersey draws some criticism. The Sabres’ primary logo was shrunk down to a small size, and slapped uncentered under a new script logo, which was supposed to pay homage to the American Hockey League’s Buffalo Bisons, which, like many of the changes made over the years, drew mixed reviews of both criticism and praise.

Femme Olympic Hockey Premier Rouge Personnalisable Team Canada Extérieur 2014

The contrasting nameplates look great, the color scheme is great, and the quilted numbers are different, but still extremely cool and unique in my opinion. In my opinion, these are some of the cooler jerseys the Sabres have rocked other than their originals.

If you didn’t come for the Buffaslug, then you might be here for this one. I introduce you all to the “turd burger.” What’s both sad and hilarious at the same time is that I didn’t come up with that name myself, nor was it a fan-given nickname to what is quite possibly one of the ugliest sweaters in NHL history, it was called that by then-Sabres president Ted Black when it was debuted in 2013. Now, I’m no jersey designer, but I don’t think a public acknowledgment from the team president calling your jersey a “turd burger” is the type of reaction you want when it’s revealed.

Unfortunately, a turd burger is exactly what most Sabres fans remember this jersey by and refer to it as. Fortunately, they didn’t have to stare at it for too long. For the first time in team history, a Sabres jersey featured yellow as the predominant color, and navy blue as the secondary color, more prominent on the back and sleeves than on the front. No, the front belonged to yellow. The sleeves and numbers were silver though, because why get rid of silver?

The primary chest logo stayed the same, perhaps the one redeeming quality of this jersey. Above that, though, right under the V-neck neckpiece, was the word “BUFFALO” again, just in case you forgot another time where the Sabres are from. The funniest part about this jersey is the way it was revealed, however. In true Sabres marketing fashion, they did a Twitter reveal by posting teases of the new alternate jersey throughout the week, and the final reveal was two pictures of former captain Steve Ott standing toward and away from the camera in a t-pose, wearing this jersey. There is not much good to be said about this one.

In the 2017-18 season, the NHL switched jersey manufacturers from Reebok to Adidas, and Adidas created their ADIZERO redesigns of the league’s 31 different jerseys. For the expansion Vegas Golden Knights, this would actually be their first jersey design. For the Sabres, they finally ditched the grey underarms and most of the grey piping around the jersey, although some grey was still kept on the sleeves and around the primary logo. To their credit, committing fully to the navy blue and grey actually made for a pretty good-looking uniform.

There were still a couple of downsides to this jersey. First, it felt a little crowded, with the player’s number not only on the back, but on the sleeves and the top right of the chest, too. Thankfully, they’ve since ditched that. The three-stripe design also made it feel a little too busy. And last, this jersey was never going to be good enough for one reason: it was not royal blue.

Ahead of the Sabres’ 50th anniversary season, called the “Golden Season” by the organization, many fans were hoping for a return to the team’s original jerseys. I mean, what better way to give the fans what they want than by returning to the most-beloved uniforms in franchise history? The Sabres didn’t end up doing that, but then again to their credit, what they did instead wasn’t all bad, either.

On August 16th, 2019, the Sabres officially unveiled their 50th anniversary jerseys: the “Golden Season” look. Ultimately, it was pretty well-received by the fans. The sweater features a ton of unique and special designs on it, and it looks as though a lot of thought was put into them. Inside the collar are images of each primary logo used by the Sabres since 1970, which appeared inside the brim of some hats sold during the 2019-20 season, as well.

The sweater was predominantly white, highlighted by fantastic gold and navy stripes on the sleeves, socks, and waist of the jersey, with the five stripes representing the five decades the Sabres have played in the NHL. The traditional crest of the Sabres serves as the primary logo, and is the same gold and navy blue color scheme as the rest of the jersey. Extra detail is sewn into the crest and numbers that add depth to the logos and stitching, giving it a totally unique look compared to other NHL jerseys around the league today.

The uniform is completed with white gloves and a white helmetvancouver hockey. The helmet and front of the pants are punctuated by a golden charging buffalo logo. It really is a shame that the 2019-20 season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, because these were some beautiful threads, and it would have been great for fans to see them worn a few more times during games.

And now, for the moment you’ve all been waiting for: the Sabres’ long-awaited “Return to Royal.” Shortly before the “Golden Season” sweater was unveiled, the Sabres also announced that they would be returning to royal blue full-time in the 2020-21 season, more than a full year before they would eventually sport these new jerseys resembling the 1970-71 originals. If there was anything for Sabres fans to be excited about, this was something to latch on to.

Finally, for the first time since 1996, the Sabres were back full-time in royal blue, with the same color schemes as the original jersey – no silver, no navy blue, and the only difference from the originals being the addition of shoulder yokes, which still look great. After so much time, so many seasons, and so many changes, the Sabres finally got everything right in one jersey. All they have to do is keep it the same, and they’ll be good.

The 2020-21 season was not one the Sabres want to remember or dwell on, but one thing is for sure: they looked amazing on the ice wearing these jerseys every single night.

Chris Snow, 42, was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in 2019.

Kelsie Snow said Wednesday on social media that her husband became unresponsive and suffered a heart attack on Tuesday.

She said paramedics and doctors were able to get his heart beating again, but he suffered a brain injury due to a lack of oxygen. She said his doctors do not expect him to wake up from the injury.

“My chest feels cracked open and hollowed out,” Kelsie Snow wrote. “Chris is the most beautiful, brilliant person I’ll ever know and doing life without him feels untenable.

“Hug your people.”

ALS is a progressive nervous system disease affecting brain cells and the spinal cord, and causes a loss of muscle control.

Snow’s father, two uncles and a cousin also died of what’s also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Gehrig, a New York Yankee, was diagnosed with it at age 36 and died in 1941.

Chris and Kelsie Snow met when they were both sportswriters for The Boston Globe and were married in 2007. They have two children, Cohen and Willa.

Chris Snow was a baseball writer when the NHL’s Minnesota Wild hired him as their director of hockey operations in 2006.

When the Wild made changes, the Flames brought Snow on board in 2011 as director of hockey analysis.

He was promoted to AGM in 2019 and worked primarily in data analysis.

Snow continued to work for the Flames after his diagnosis. He was named the team’s vice-president of data and analytics in May when Craig Conroy was named the club’s new general manager.

Snow participated in clinical trials and lived well beyond the bleak 12-month prognosis he was given.

“It doesn’t seem right not have Snowy here with me,” a visibly emotional Conroy said Wednesday at a press conference to introduce new Flames captain Mikael Backlund.

“I was fortunate enough to bring Cohen. Little Snowy’s here, and that means more than you know.”

ALS weakened Chris Snow’s muscles and hampered his ability to speak and eat.

“We cannot convey the impact Chris has on our organization, not only in his work but the leadership and positivity he brings,” the Flames said on social media. “Despite his own challenges, he is a beacon of light, uplifting all of

DES MOINES, Iowa — Steven Fogarty saw his team hit an “all-time low” in early February.

Fogarty, 31, the captain of the Minnesota Wild’s AHL affiliate Iowa, didn’t even have to see it, though. He felt it.

The losses kept piling up: 10 in 12 games right before the All-Star break. It was to be expected in some ways. This was a young team, with a green blue line and a first-year head coach in Brett McLean. The anticipated captain, defenseman Dakota Mermis, played just five AHL games before spending the rest of the season with the NHL club. Vinni Lettieri played just 10. Another potential leader, Jujhar Khaira, missed a huge chunk of the season with injuries.

The low point came on Feb. 2, in Hendersonville, Nevada. Iowa got whipped 8-1.

“We were slapping pucks around and not making plays,” Fogarty recalled. “Like, ‘Here we go again.’”

Something needed to happen. Needed to change.

So later that night at the team hotel, Fogarty spoke up. Others did, too. Even Fogarty will admit, his speech was nothing compared to Mason Shaw’s.

Shaw, a heart-and-soul bottom-sixer with the NHL team, was just six games into his return from a fourth ACL surgery. Initially, he didn’t feel it was his place to take center stage. But he knows everyone needs a pep talk when they hit rock bottom. He’s been there.

Shaw got up and unleashed.

“There were a few swear words,” defenseman Carson Lambos quipped.

This wasn’t a rip fest, though. Shaw reminded everyone that they were good players. It was a matter of believing in themselves. Trusting their ability. Knowing they were there for a reason. Shaw, who has feared losing his hockey career multiple times, told them not to take this opportunity for granted. They may not be in the NHL yet or on the fastest timeline, but they’re still here. “You get in what you put in.”

Iowa would rattle off three straight victories after that, including the next game in Henderson, with Shaw scoring the winner.

But while it played better down the stretch, finishing 13-12-3-2 after a 14-25-1-2 start, Iowa still finished the season 29th out of 32 teams.

Its young defense prospects, touted as the highlight of the system, didn’t develop as expected. New Iowa general manager Matt Hendricks said they were “drinking out of a firehose” — perhaps too much too soon.

The lack of offensive options, meanwhile, was felt from above in the form of ineffective call-ups. Adam Beckman and Sammy Walker combined for zero goals in 15 NHL games. Lettieri and Jacob Lucchini weren’t suited to play in the top six.

Minnesota Wild president and GM Bill Guerin made it clear at his exit-meeting press conference that fixing this is a priority: the organization needs to do a better job of creating depth. It will be discussed again this week at the team’s meetings. So will Iowa.

“This year,” McLean said. “Was kind of the perfect storm.”

It begs the question: What went wrong?

Maillot Breakaway de la Conférence Ouest du All-Star Game de marque pour femmes - Blanc

To get a better feel for what’s going on with the next wave of Wild’s prospects, The Athletic spent several days embedded in Iowa late in the regular season, from meetings and film sessions to practices.

It was 8 a.m. on March 26, and McLean had already been at Wells Fargo Arena for a while.

He wore a black Wild sweatsuit, sitting at his desk. But it wasn’t his office. His three assistants, Ben Simon, Cody Franson and Richard Bachman (goaltending), had seats at desks to his left and right. McLean’s predecessor, Tim Army, occupied this space on his own. But McLean, taking a page from former Wild coach Dean Evason’s approach with his TRIA office, prefers to have his staff in one place.

“It wasn’t, ‘You’re in charge of this. You’re in charge of that,’” Simon said. “It’s we. It’s ours. It’s very inclusive.”

That spirit showed as McLean went through the morning staff meeting and the group went over video clips.

“You watch tonight’s movie?” McLean asked, referring to the pre-scout of the night’s opponent, Milwaukee. The coaches looked at faceoff plays and the Admirals’ quick-strike ability. They then went over their own 1-3-1 forecheck. There were a lot of positive clips, like Fogarty’s play to set up a recent winning goal.

“Unbelievable effort by Fogs,” McLean said. “It all starts with effort.”

This is the first time McLean has run his own program. He wasn’t expecting the Iowa job over the summer, having spent the past few years as an assistant under Evason. But Guerin wanted a fresh voice for his AHL club, a different culture, and McLean — after talking with his family — was up for the gig. His wife, Brenna, and three kids (Nash, 8, Nixon, 12, Darian, 17) still live in the Twin Cities, and he commutes often on off days. It’s three hours, 15 minutes door to door.

Simon’s family is back in Michigan and Franson’s in Kelowna, which has created a bit of a bunker mentality.

The systems and drills in practice are pretty similar to the Wild’sles rangers de new york. Coach John Hynes invited McLean to a few of his early practices in Minnesota after the late November hire to build synergy. One thing that sticks out to players and staff is the positive and hardworking vibe instilled by McLean, a former NHL forward. Simon said McLean’s big phrase is “it’s not how you play; it’s how you act” — and that means players’ attitude in practice, toward referees and how they respond to teammates.

And McLean doubled down on team-building events. One day, players got a late text saying to come to practice at the field house the next day in shorts and T-shirts.

“We thought we were going to run sprints,” Lambos said.

Instead, McLean had organized a wiffle ball tournament. There are also team dinners on the road. A “pins and putts” mini-golf and bowling outing. For Master’s weekend, the team had food brought in and created a mini-golf course in the dressing room.

“Brett has been a breath of fresh air,” Iowa forward Michael Milne said. “He is very positive. It’s easy to get down when you’re losing a few games here or there. We had our stretches where we haven’t been as good. But it’s nice to have that calming presence and confidence from coaches, getting us to believe. It’s tough when your coaches are down on you. They do a great job of lifting us up. Learning through losses. We’re a very young team — there’s a lot of prospects — but the guys are getting better.”

That’s not to say this is a country club, McLean is quick to point out. There’s accountability. For example, each player is graded by scoring chances for/against while he is on the ice for each game (along with the plus-minus differential). It’s put on a sheet in the hallway so everyone can see it. McLean said, from an execution standpoint, he’s only been disappointed in a few practices all year, though. The kids didn’t give up.

“We’re not putting the screws to guys too much,” McLean said. “(The losses) are not what we wanted, but it’s about getting better and trying to take the positive. You still want to hold guys accountable. So that’s a bit of a balance for sure.”

McLean holds himself accountable, too.

He admitted that naming Mermis captain before the season might have been premature, knowing the defenseman’s place on the organization’s depth chart and the injury to captain Jared Spurgeon. AHL teams get just five veteran players (320 pro games of experience before the start of the season). There were nights Iowa had only a couple. Lucchini, their most consistent forward, was with the Wild a lot. Khaira, Mermis — these guys are hard to replace during the season with a PTO, though the team did add vets like Will Butcher and Turner Elson later in the year.

Minnesota assistant GM Mike Murray, the Iowa GM last year, said McLean isn’t evaluated on wins and losses, especially under these circumstances. But being in the basement hits hard.

“It weighs on you a lot as a first-year coach,” McLean said. “I feel very honored to have this responsibility to take care of the Wild prospects. So when you’re not winning, you wear it.”

One by one, the Wild’s top defense prospects popped into a side room with Franson.

It was like a professor’s “office hours” in college.

Franson, 36, a defenseman for 550 NHL regular-season games, was hired in late December to replace Pat Dwyer, who got called up to the Minnesota staff. He focuses on the blue line, including on-ice skill work after practice. But a bulk of his impact is felt in these five-to-10-minute film sessions. He’ll pull players in on a game day after meetings or a skate. On this particular Tuesday, Daemon Hunt — Iowa’s No. 1 defenseman — went first. Most of Franson’s notes were, he admitted, “nitpicky.”

Then came Lambos.

The 2021 first-rounder had an up-and-down rookie pro season after wrapping up his career in junior. At first, it was eye-opening — “a million miles a minute,” he said. But then came progress. Franson said Lambos “lives and breathes” the game and is like a sponge. In this meeting, Franson gave him pointers on positioning, breakouts and reads. The biggest thing is thinking the game faster. Franson showed a clip where Lambos was patient waiting for a pass behind the net but then took an extra handle with the puck, which made his breakout pass a half-second late.

“It’s what we’re working on,” Franson said. “Trying to get to playmaking quick.”

“I have to realize that,” Lambos replied. “I don’t feel comfortable when the puck is going away from me. You can see the guys chasing me. I feel the pressure. He has all the speed. I’m waiting for the puck. If I can get it under control, I shouldn’t have to worry about the guy coming so much.”

“Everything is a chess match,” Franson said.mascotte des canadiens de montréal

Franson has a unique perspective, having finished his career in a mentor role in AHL Rockford and Hershey. With Rockford, Franson said, the team treated him “like Reggie Dunlop, a player-coach.” He played with a five-game segment with every defense prospect, in their ear shift by shift on the bench. In Hershey, Franson did something similar but for 20-game segments.

It’s the kind of veteran mentor that Mermis was supposed to be for Iowa. Rookies Lambos and David Spacek went through growing pains playing on the same pair.

“It’s very difficult going from being defensemen in junior hockey to defense in pro hockey,” Franson said. “You have to be able to comprehend a lot really quickly. The forwards you play against are significantly better. You’re the best player in junior. You’re an average player to start here.”no 19 bruins de boston

That’s why these clips focus on the details — how to process the game faster and be in the right position quicker.

“He’s fresh out of playing so he remembers everything,” defenseman Ryan O’Rourke said. “It’s easier to relate to him.”

“He sees the things I’m struggling with, and he’s really good at communicating how to fix them,” Lambos said.

Can the Wild’s young defensemen develop properly without a veteran partner, though?

“It can be done,” Franson said. “It just takes longer. It’s a little bit more of a struggle for them to figure out when they don’t have that. ”

So the Wild just need to add a veteran defenseman to Iowa? The problem is there’s already a logjam at the position of prospects who need to play.

Hunt, Lambos, O’Rourke, Spacek, Kyle Masters, perhaps Simon Johansson (who is a restricted free agent).

On this night in March, Hendricks arrived mid-game with another in tow, Jack Peart, who had just signed after his junior year at St. Cloud State.

This doesn’t preclude Iowa from adding an experienced defenseman to the mix. But it should promote competition. Hendricks said the prospects need to get used to competing for jobs. There should be more urgency next season.

“That’s what they want,” Hendricks said. “They want to make it. It’s our job to deliver that kind of message.”

Hendricks had been the Wild’s assistant director of player development for five seasons after ending his 11-year playing career. He was promoted to Iowa GM this past month. Hendricks was a regular presence in Iowa last season, traveling often to see and work with prospects, sometimes on the ice. His focus this summer will be getting them some help in free agency.

The NHL blue line is pretty set, with Spurgeon, Jonas Brodin, Brock Faber, Jake Middleton, Zach Bogosian and Jon Merrill under contract. Waiver pickup Declan Chisholm, an RFA, is expected to be part of the group. With little room on the NHL roster, the Wild will likely have to sign veteran free agents to deals that pay them strong AHL salaries.

“We’ve got to stay patient as a group,” Hendricks said. “There’s a pedigree there. They were drafted here for a reason. … Playing defense at the highest level is extremely difficult. It makes what Faber was able to do so incredible, a wow moment. We’re not going to push a button and all of a sudden things look the way you want them to.”

Hendricks’ career is an example. He spent his first five pro seasons in the AHL. At 25, Hendricks got an offer to play pro in Europe. It was more money and stability. “My wife asked me, ‘You ever dream of playing in Europe?’” Hendricks recalled. “‘Well no.’ ‘Then why would we go?’ Two years later, I get four games (in the NHL) and finally made it full-time.”

So Hendricks understands the humbling nature of development.

Lambos said there were times this past season when he wasn’t playing with confidence — was just “trying to go out there and survive.” The key for him was recognizing how he felt in those games compared to the games where he was relaxed, having fun and making plays.

“I have the perspective that I’m grateful to be playing at this level and they’re paying me to do this,” Lambos said. “Just trying to be patient, and I’m confident in myself that through time I’m going to grow and get better where I can be a very good player at this level. I’m here for a reason. You can’t get too ahead of yourself and, of course, you want to get (to the NHL). I’m confident my time will come, and I’m going to earn it.

“You’ve got to be your own player and can’t try to be Brock Faber tomorrow.”

Hendricks brought up the positives from last year in Iowa. Caedan Bankier returned ahead of schedule from an Achilles injury and ended up with 13 goals in his first pro season. Spacek just won a gold medal at worlds for Czechia. Milne showed how his speed and versatility could make him an NHL player. Hunt played huge minutes and earned 12 games with the Wild and hopes to soon compete for a full-time job.golden knights games in vegas

“I feel like I belonged there,” Hunt said. “I know I’ve got to work on my game a lot. The game in the NHL is way different than here — just way less mistakes. My game translates well. Guys are always in their spots. Time will tell, but I think I’m in a pretty good spot.”

Murray used Marco Rossi as a development success story. The 2020 No. 9 pick needed seasoning in Iowa in 2022-23 before making the jump to full-time regular this past season, scoring 21 goals. “It’s letting your prospects grow and giving them the time and not panicking or rushing because their development might take longer than we all want it to, whether it’s as an organization or a fan base,” Murray said.

The Wild have talked about using the Nashville Predators’ and Tampa Bay Lightning’s development programs as an example. Both teams are being patient with their players while also creating a winning culture.

“If you don’t develop that skill to win, people won’t want you,” Simon said. “When you surround the kids in a winning environment and a positive culture, it’s only going to get these players better quicker.”

This was a tight-knit group in Iowa. When veterans were called up or injured, younger players stepped up leadership-wise, including touted goalie prospect Jesper Wallstedt. Whether Wallstedt is part of the Wild’s NHL tandem next season remains to be seen, but Hendricks really likes the goalie they signed this spring in Samuel Hlavaj, who was one of the top goalies in the World Championship, playing for Slovakia.

But as Hendricks and the Wild staff meet to discuss the future, they’ll have to look back and revisit what made this past season so challenging.

Could they have been more prepared?

“We want to say we could have,” Hendricks said. “Because we went through it. And we hope we learned from it. And we hope we have the answers. But it’s difficult. It was a perfect storm. It really was.”
