BACKGROUND: On September 21, 2018 several communities in the Ottawa-Gatineau region – Dunrobin, Riverside South/Hunt-Club and Gatineau in particular – were devastated by a tornado. This is our home, and being part of a community means coming together in times of need. The Ottawa Senators Hockey Club and their fans aim to raise funds to assist communities and families here at home. We have been in touch with officials at the City of Ottawa and Gatineau. With their first responders and utilities meeting the most pressing needs of those affected by the tornado, they indicated the best way to help was by providing financial support to the rebuilding effort.

At this stage, we do not know the full extent of the financial needs faced by those affected by the tornado. For this reason, we are starting our campaign with a $25K target, which the Ottawa Senators Foundation has guaranteed to match. As the situation evolves and the campaign grows, we will adjust our commitment to better meet the needs of the community.

The Ottawa Senators would like to acknowledge the efforts of the first responders in the Ottawa-Gatineau area and our support for Hydro Ottawa and Hydro-Quebec who are working diligently to help the hundreds of thousands who have lost power as a result of the storm. The Senators would also like to thank the Canadian Red Cross for their relief efforts for the citizens of our region.

SAN JOSE – At least two candidates, Ryan Warsofsky and Jeff Blashill, have had or will have second interviews for the San Jose Sharks’ head coaching job, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

Another candidate, Marco Sturm, also recently interviewed for the position, Friedman said on his “32 Thoughts” podcast published Monday morning. The Sharks recently received permission from the Los Angeles Kings to speak with the former NHL winger about the opening. Sturm has coached the Kings’ AHL affiliate, the Ontario Reign, for the past two seasons.

Warsofsky, 36, was on former coach David Quinn’s staff for the past two years and coordinated the team’s penalty kill and defense. Quinn was fired by Sharks general manager on April 24 after two seasons and a 41-98-25 record. Before coming to San Jose, Warsofsky had been an AHL head coach for four years, including from 2020 to 2022 with the Chicago Wolves. In 2021-2022, Warsofsky became the youngest coach to win the Calder Cup since Peter Laviolette in 1999, as the Wolves finished the regular season with a 50-16-10 record and went 14-4 in the playoffs.

The Winnipeg Jets are reportedly looking to shake up their roster this offseason and the primary piece potentially on the move is talented, scoring winger Nikolaj Ehlers. Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan has made it no secret that he has wanted to add serious scoring talent to his team’s forward group. During his Breakdown Day media availability just a few weeks ago, MacLellan restated his desire to do so, mentioning that the team would peruse both the trade and free agency market for the right fit.

The Jets were also dynamite with Ehlers on the ice from a pure process perspective. During his over 1,000 minutes of five-on-five ice time this past year, Winnipeg saw 55.2 percent of the shot attempts, 54.9 percent of the expected goals, 55.3 percent of the scoring chances, and 54.2 percent of the high-danger chances. They out-scored opponents 62-33 with him over the boards.

Ehlers would be a prime candidate for a sign-and-trade this summer as the Jets would be able to maximize their potential return and his eventual landing spot would be able to assure his services for more than just next season. And, the Capitals do fit the mold of being one of those suitors.

Washington will have plenty of cap space next season to fit Ehlers’ $6 million hit under the cap and plenty of future cap space to fit any larger extension on their roster. The Capitals also have stockpiled a good amount of draft capital which could interest a Winnipeg team that has seen its draft cupboards run dry over the past couple of seasons. The Jets do not have a first-round or third-round pick this year and don’t have a second-round or fourth-round pick next year.

Ehlers would also have an immediate spot high on the Capitals’ depth chart with Max Pacioretty and Nicolas Aube-Kubel likely departing Washington in unrestricted free agency. TJ Oshie’s health status is also still up in the air and Ryan Leonard is currently still committed to his sophomore year at Boston College.

Winnipeg faced yet another early playoff exit after being ousted by the Colorado Avalanche in five games in the first round. The team’s head coach, Rick Bowness, retired after the series loss so the club is in transition. Dealing Ehlers could be the launching point for a reformat of a franchise that has made it out of the first round just twice since they arrived in Winnipeg from Atlanta.
